Abstract: To protect the valuable field geological resources that have become increasingly vulnerable to natural or human damage in recent years, and to facilitate teaching reform in online virtual geological practice in the post-pandemic era, an automatic field geological section reconstruction technology based on 3D laser scanning is proposed. Using the FARO 3D laser scanner, 3D high-density point cloud data is collected from field geological outcrops of various scales. By processing, optimizing, and visually modeling the high-quality data collected from the field, this technology can protect precious field geological resources and enrich students’ virtual geological practice resources. Taking some field geological outcrops from the Longhuitou Scenic Area in Xingcheng City, Liaoning Province, as examples, virtual geological modeling and visualization applications are carried out, enhancing the quality of geological practice teaching. This approach serves the preservation of field geological legacies and significantly contributes to the advancement of geological education by providing a more interactive and enriched virtual learning environment.
