Abstract: Effect of hydrogen on unstable austenitic stainless steel was investigated by cathodic hydrogen charging. It was found that hydrogen increased the fault energy of this austenitic stainless steel and caused grain softening. Drawing improved the formation of α′ martensite phase, which increased the embrittlement of the material.

Key words: unstable austenitic stainless steel, cathodic hydrogen charging, hydrogen embrittlement
