Abstract: A numerical simulation on the flow past a square cylinder placed in parallel to shear flow was studied by means of lattice Boltzmann method. The flow was calculated for different velocity gradients, the streamlines and vorticity contours were obtained. Numerical results show two series of vortexes with different sizes. With the increase of the velocity gradient, the difference between the two series of vortexes appears more clearly. Numerical results are coincident with the theoretical analysis, it is identified that lattice Boltzmann method is suitable for simulating the shear flow past a square cylinder.
