Abstract: The effects of small addition of rare earth (RE) on mechanical properties and stress corrosion behavior of Al-Zn-Mg alloy have been investigated. The results show that the addition of RE causes a shift of the peak hardness to shorter aging time and significantly increases the hardness, yield strength, tensile strength, elongation as well as stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance in the peak hardness of alloys aged at 150 ℃. Optical microscopy observation and X-ray diffraction showed that RE decreases grain sizes and expedite the precipitation of strengthing phase(MgZn2). In addition, the a ddition of RE decreases markedly hydrogen content in the alloy.
