Abstract: Development of computer and information technology calls for basic researches including applicationoriented basic research. In order to solidify and extend research teams, and further to make progress in IT technology, it is necessary to clarify scientific fundamentals for computer technology. This paper presents a new definition of computing science or informatics, categorizes basic researches of computer engineering and comments on research situation for each category in the mainland of China.
