Effect of exhaust gas recirculation on internal combustion engine fueled with butanol/diesel blend

Abstract: The effect of butanol/diesel blend fuel on combustion and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine is investigated. The action mechanisms of several boundary parameters, such as butanol fraction, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) rate and combustion phasing, are analyzed. The results show that with the increase in butanol fraction, the ignition delay is extended and a higher proportion of premixed combustion is obtained, thus, better combustion timeliness can be achieved. The smoke and NOx emissions are reduced simultaneously with a combined application of EGR and blended fuel. However, this compromises the engine output and the indicated thermal efficiency. In order to recover the lost power output due to the joint use of ESR and blended fuel, the combustion phasing is adjusted to match the specific ESR rates used in the tests. With an appropriate strategy, the power output of the engine can be recovered with almost no influence on the overall emission.
