Abstract:

The curvature is an important geometric attributes of the surface and the discrete curvature estimation is a basic step of the modeling in the reverse engineering. A novel discrete curvature estimation algorithm was proposed which can be used both for the triangular mesh model and the scattered point data. The algorithm identifies the potential anomalous estimation regions of the Meyer discrete curvature estimation method based on the triangular mesh model. Choosing the 2ring neighborhoods of the vertex in anomalous regions as the kneighborhood, using the weighted local paraboloid fitting to estimate the curvatures in the anomalous region. The algorithm was extended to the scattered point data by constructing the local triangular meshing. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively identify the basic features of the surface and is not sensitive to the shape of the triangular mesh, can surpress the noise to a certain extent.
