Effect of Fe-based fuel additive on diesel engine particulate emissions

Abstract: Adding small amount of Fe-based additive into the low-sulfur (w(S)=30?10-6) diesel fuel to investigate experimentally the effects of Fe on the diesel engine power, fuel economy, gaseous emissions and particulate emissions including particle number concentration and size distribution. Results showed that Fe addition leads to a slight increase in power output, a slight decrease in specific fuel consumption, and more or less decrease of CO,HC,and NOx emissions. Fe additive produces the additional nano-particles beyond the diesel particulates and increases the total particle number concentration, especially the nucleation mode particle. Under all test conditions, Fe additive makes the ratios of the nucleation mode particle higher than 90%, and always higher than those using the standard diesel fuel without Fe additives. Use of Fe additive leads to an obvious reduction of the accumulation mode particle emission except under high-speed conditions.
