Tire-Road Friction Coefficient Estimation Based on Steer-by-wire System

Abstract: Some statistics show that tire-road friction coefficient is critical importance for vehicle active control system. This paper proposes a tire-road friction coefficient estimation method for advanced vehicle steer-by-wire system. A vehicle model is built and model-based friction coefficient estimator make use of expended kalman filters (EKF) technique, which can be used for estimation of vehicle self-align torque and road adhesion condition. Simulation and experimental results by on-center handling and steering wheel angle step input conditions show the effectiveness and robust of the proposed estimation.
