Abstract: In order to investigate the genetic structure of Dongzhouperiod ancient population in Helingeer in Inner Mongolia and relationships between the ancient population and related extant populations as well as to trace the possible origin at a molecular level, mtDNA hypervariable region Ⅰ (HVR Ⅰ) of 10 ancient individuals was amplified and sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis and multidimensional scaling analysis were also performed based on the mtDNA data of the ancient population and the related Eurasian populations. The results show that the ancient population is closer to the populations from Northern Asian than the other compared populations in matrilineal lineage. Combining the research results of archaeology and anthropology as well as molecular biology, we can conclude that they are nomad who migrated from Mongolian altiplano and cisBaikal area to Helingeer in Inner Mongolia.
