Detection of sodium sulfoxylate formaldehyde in flour by Catalytic Spectrophotometry of Methyl red-KBrO3

Abstract: A kinetic spectrophotometric method for the detection of sodium sulfoxylate formaldehyde (SSF) in the flour based on its kinetic effect on the oxidation reaction of methyl red by bromate ion in acid medium is studied. The optimal test conditions are as follows. The reaction temperature and reaction time are 15 ℃ and 9 minutes. The concentration of hydrochloric acid(2mol/L), methyl red solution(0.05%, w/w) and potassium bromate solution(0.01 mol/L) are 2.6mL, 3.8mL and 1.6mL respectively. The linear range for formaldehyde is 0.0243~1944 mg/L. The precision and recovery are 4.03% and 96.25% respectively. The test results remain stable in 4 hours with a high anti-interference ability.
