Microbiologically influenced corrosion of magnesium alloy based on solid culture medium

Abstract:

The Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) of magnesium alloy was investigated using a special designed corrosion method, which was called solid culture medium adherence corrosion method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and polarization curves were employed to analyze the microbiologically influenced corrosion behavior of magnesium alloy. The results indicated that the appearance of SRB resulted in a rapid pitting corrosion of AZ91 electrodes. The main characteristic of the MIC of the magnesium alloy was pitting corrosion. The metabolism of SRB which involved hydrogenase was the main reason for the MIC of AZ91 alloy. The SRB accelerated the cathodic reaction through the cathodic depolarization.
