Effect of ultrasonic treatment on microstructures and properties of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys

Abstract:

Hypereutectic Al23%Si alloy was ultrasonic treated using a novel ultrasonic treatment equipment. The effects of ultrasonic power on the morphology and distribution of the microstructure as well as properties of the studied alloy were investigated. The course of crystallization and mechanism of microstrctural refinement for the ultrasonic treated alloy were also discussed. The results show that the ultrasonic treatment can greatly reduce the size of primary Si particulates, make them distribute much uniformly, and it can change the morphology of αAl phase from dendrite to equiaxial grain meanwhile the eutectic phase become courser than it was before. The distribution of hardness was even and the wear resistance was increased by ultrasonic treatment on Al23%Si alloy.
