Abstract:

Nylon-6/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite containing 4% of MMT was prepared by melt blending. The dispersion of MMT in nylon\|6 was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the MMT layers were exfoliated and uniformly dispersed in nylon-6 matrix. When nylon-6 and nylon-6/MMT nanocomposite were drawn at the same temperature and drawing ratio in a temperature range from room temperature to 200 ℃, the  crystallinity of nylon-6/MMT nanocomposite was lower than that of nylon-6, while the MMT still had strengthening effect in nylon-6 matrix. The strengthening effect could be attributed to the interaction between MMT layers and nylon-6 molecules. The interaction restricted the motions of nylon-6 molecular chains, which resulted in the deformation resistance of nylon-6 during drawing.
