Failure mode analysis of computer numerical control machine tools based on fuzzy-DEA

Abstract:

The crucial issues in Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) for machine tools are the great uncertainty or unreasonable weights of severity, occurrence and detection effect factors which are determined by the experience of experts. To overcome such disadvantages, a modified FMEA was presented based on Fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis (Fuzzy-DEA). A method to determine the weights of the effect factors was proposed based on the advantages of DEA that can assess the effectiveness of each unit. According to the relationship between the weights and the effect factors, a model of the risk priorities of failure modes was developed when a certain level of "h" was given. The rank of failure mode criticalities was determined according to the risk priorities. A case study was provided to demonstrate the use of the proposed FMEA in the design of CNC lathe and show its potential application and benefits. This study verified the feasibility of the proposed method.
