Flail arm syndrome: A case report and literature review

Abstract:

Objective: To analyze the clinical materials of one patient with flail arm syndrome (FAS), and to provide evidence for its clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods: The neurological examination,MRI of cranial,cervical and lumbar, and electromyogram (EMG) were performed in the patient and the patient was clinically diagnosed as FAS; the FAS patient was given the treatment to improve the circulation and nourish the nerves.At the same time, comparative analysis of the results between this case report and other case reports of FAS was performed.Results: The patient was diagnosed as FAS after neurological examination and accessory examination:after symptomatic treatment,the condition of patient had the continuous progress,and the upper extremities of the patient were heavier than those of the lower extremities.The patient died of phlegm blocking airway 9 months after discharged.Conclusion: The patients with bilateral symmetric proximal upper extremities weakness and atrophy should be considered as FAS after the other factors are excluded by EMG and imaging examinations.
