Evaluation on effect of health education on iodine deficiency disorders in Shandong Province

Abstract:

Abstract:Objective To investigate and analyze the knowledge level and change of iodized salt coverage among population with iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Shandong Province before and after the interventions, and to provide the basis for the development of health education control strategies for IDD in Shandong Province. Methods Forty-five counties were randomly selected to conduct health education interventions among 100 counties with IDD in Shandong province.Three townships were randomly selected in sample counties, 30 villages (or communities) were randomly selected among sample townships, 30 students graded 4-6 and 15 housewives were randomly selected in each sample village or community.Questionnaires on IDD knowledge were conducted and household salt was collected to measure knowledge level and coverage rate among the subjects, respectively.Results The knowledge rate among school students was increased from 81.88% to 97.06%, 15.18% higher than that in baseline survey. The knowledge rate among housewives was increased from 82.59 to 95.46%, 12.97% higher than that in baseline survey.The coverage rate was increased from 98.95% to 00.00%.Conclusion IDD health education is an effective measurement.
