Analysis of conflict factors between pedestrians and channelized right turn vehicles at signalized intersections

Abstract:

The operation of pedestrians and vehicles at signalized intersections differs between common right-turning and channelized right-turning. Compared with common right-turning, in channelized right-turning, the vehicle turning radius is larger, and velocity becomes faster. For pedestrians, there is no such aggregation characteristic during the red light. To get a better understanding of the conflict between pedestrians and channelized right turn vehicles at signalized intersections, odds-ratios were used to analyze the conflict risk between pedestrians in crossing the road and vehicles. Results show that the occurrences of pedestrian-vehicle conflict and pedestrians' yielding behavior to vehicles are influenced by the scale of crowd, the velocity of pedestrians, the trajectory chosen by pedestrians to cross the intersections and the direction whether the pedestrians are exiting or entering the intersection. On this basis, we made a penetrating analysis of different trajectory factors and obtained their influences on conflicts and pedestrians' yielding behaviors.
