Balanced control method for road network traffic state

Abstract: In order to alleviate the road network jam, a balanced control method was proposed for the road network state. The road intersection saturation degree was chosen as the traffic state index, a bi-level programming optimization model was built for the balanced control of the road network traffic state to minimize the maximal road network saturation degree. This optimization model was solved by the genetic algorithm to optimize the traffic signal cycle and its green-red split. The balanced control was improved by consideration of the delay index, traffic state, and the relative importance of each intersection. The numerical simulation results showed that the proposed method can effectively alleviate the traffic jam in the critical region.
