Quantitative study of gas exchange loss of internal combustion engine

Abstract: A concept of Newtonian ideal gas flow was defined and an energy equation for the Newtonian ideal gas flow was derived. Based on the test on a LJ491QE1 gasoline engine, its gas exchange losses were calculated using the above-mentioned equation. The results showed that at low-load conditions of the naturally aspirated port fuel injection gasoline engine, the intake loss power accounts for higher percentage of its effective power output, and the exhaust loss for high-load conditions. The proposed quantitative theory of gas exchange loss of the internal combustion engine is significant for further study on actual cycle losses of the engine.
