Effects of combustion chamber on the mixture formation and combustion characteristics of diesel engine

Abstract: Based on the combustion chamber of a developed 2.0 L CR high-pressure DI diesel engine, a simulation model was established using software FIRE. The effects of different combustion chamber structures on the velocity field and turbulent characteristics inside the chamber were analyzed by using simulation. Besides, a dimensionless parameter Da number, which is closely related to the mixture formation and combustion process, was introduced in this paper. The influence of the chamber structure on the mixture formation mechanism, the combustion process and the generation rates of NO and soot were analyzed. The results show that the formation of NO and soot can be effectively prevented by controlling the mixture formation and the combustion process through the rational design of the combustion chamber structure.
