Effect of wind tunnel test section geometry on test result

Abstract:

The effects of the test section geometry of the open type automotive wind tunnel on the test results were investigated by numerical simulation based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The factors affecting the test in the open type automotive wind tunnel were discussed. The effects of the nozzle section area, the collector section area and the test section length on the measurement of aerodynamic drag coefficient were studied by numerical simulations to obtain the change trends of the aerodynamic drag coefficient along with these geometric changes. The results show that the nozzle area affects the drag significantly, the collector area and the test section length have less effect than that of the nozzle area. The effect of the air chamber was also explored preliminarily and it was found that the air chamber affects little on the aerodynamic drag coefficient.
