Analysis of microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 5554 welded joints with dissimilar solders

Abstract:

The tungsten inert gas arc welding(TIG) technology was applied on aluminum alloy 5554. The microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints by different solders were compared using the universal tensile testing machine, the optical microscopy and the micro-hardness tester. Results show that with the increasing content of magnesium in the solder, mechanical properties of welded joints became weaker, and more heat cracks appeared in the solder. The micro-hardness in welded joints with three kinds of solder is all lower than the parent metal.According to the experimental verification this is resulted from the thermal insulation after welding.
