Numerical simulation on aerodynamic characteristics of heavy-duty truck driving on bridge within crosswind

Abstract: The aerodynamic characteristics of a heavy-duty truck driving on a bridge were studied by the numerical simulation under 4 crosswind intensities with windspeeds 0,10,20 and 30 m/s. The changes of the air flow field around the truck under different crosswind intensities and under the influence of the bridge parapet were studied. It was found that when a truck driving on a bridge under crosswind, strong vortexs form between the truck and the bridge parapet due to existence of the parapet, and the flow field around the truck changes with crosswind intensities. The aerodynamic characteristic of the truck on a bridge is different slightly from that of the truck on ground, and the drag force is proportional to the crosswind intensity.
