Fabrication and properties of tappet with diamond-like carbon film

Abstract: The diamond-like carbon (DLC) film was deposited on the valve train tappet of a FAW(First Automobile Works) production engine by dc magnetron sputtering which using methane and argon as the precursors. The influence of the tribological properties of the DLC valve train tappet on engine fuel economy was studied by the test in the universal material tester and the electrically driven valve train test rig. The test results show that friction factor of the DLC valve train was reduced by 67% and the ability of wear resistance was enhanced. Mechanical friction loss of engine valve train was decreased by 6%. DLC coating of engine component makes engines more efficient, so this technology is suitable for the low carbon technical route.
