Abstract: Objective To observe the effects of Acanthopanax senticosus saponins(ASS) on hemorrheology and platelet function in experimental cerebral ischemia rats. Methods The cerebral ischemia model induced by bilateral common carotid artery clamping and controlled hemorrhage to a mean arterial pressure of 50 mmHg was produced in rats treated by continuous intraperitoneal injection of ASS with dosages of 25,50,100 mg•kg-1 for 3 days. The effects of ASS on the hemorrheology and platelet aggregation and adhesion functions were measured after 15 min. Results ASS with dosages of 50 and 100 mg•kg-1 decreased the blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, plasma fibrinogen concentration, erythrocyte sedimentation, hematocrit, erythrocyte aggregation index, and erythrocyte rigidity index markedly, and inhibited platelet aggregation and adhesion functions. Conclusion ASS can improve evidently abnormal changes of hemorrheology and platelet functions in experimental cerebral ischemia rats.
