Influence of Ho on corrosion behavior of AZ91 magnesium alloy

Abstract:

Three kinds of AZ91 magnesium alloys, modified by holmium, were prepared using gravity casting. The behaviors of selfcorrosion and galvanic corrosion of the modified alloys were investigated by corrosion tests, respectively. The results indicated that both selfcorrosion and galvanic corrosion resistance of the modified alloys gradually increased with increasing the Ho content, and the magnesium alloys containing 1.10% and 2.16% Ho exhibited better corrosion resistance. In addition, the characteristics of the cathodes evidently had effects on the galvanic corrosion resistance of the modified alloys, and the cathodic potencies of the four kinds of cathodes were ranked in ascending order: AlSi alloy, pure Al, 45# steel and nodular cast iron. The effect of Ho on the corrosion resistance of AZ91 magnesium alloy was attributed to effectively restraining the cathodic effect of β phase and increasing selfcorrosion potential.
